Basement conversion
Things to consider
Lighting
The simplest and cheapest option is to construct a regular basement without windows which can be used for storage or as a utility room, to free up space throughout the rest of your house.
However, if you want to use the basement as living space you will want to consider how you will get natural light into it. Sophisticated lighting solutions will not only add to your comfort but also increase the basement’s value when you come to sell.
Here are some suggestions on how to access natural light in your basement:
- Construct a sunken garden - This involves excavating extra space around the basement for use as a garden. Including access via glass doors will allow a wealth of natural light into the basement
- Place flat rooflights beneath the existing garden - These are flat ceiling windows, best positioned on the southern side of the garden
- Use light colours inside the basement to increase light distribution
- Use an open-plan layout so as not to block light.
Waterproofing
Whether you are building or just converting, your basement will need to be made waterproof to prevent damp and mould. Basement waterproofing is achieved through two main methods:
- Tanking - This involves applying a waterproof cement system to the walls, floors and in some cases ceilings. It is used to make the walls permanently watertight
- Cavity membrane drainage - This allows water into your basement and redirects it towards an allotted exit point.
Be sure to fully discuss waterproofing methods with a professional builder before you begin your project.
Basement bathrooms
Basements can get particularly cold, which means using washing facilities may be uncomfortable unless the space is sufficiently heated.
You will need to be sure the type of toilet you select is suitable for underground usage. Ventilation also needs careful consideration when constructing an underground bathroom.
Placing your new bathroom underneath current washroom facilities should make plumbing cheaper and less complicated. In any case, it’s best to consult a professional about the practicalities of building a basement bathroom ahead of starting. Similar plumbing considerations also apply for basement kitchens.
